Teens and Parents

Family counseling for teenagers in bellingham WA - Joe Mackie Counseling.Parents of adolescents sometimes find themselves embroiled in patterns of conflict as their teens make that sometimes perilous transition from childhood to adulthood. This can be a very confusing developmental stage for both teens and their parents. Having a third party help navigate these challenging times can be beneficial to all concerned. I offer family counseling to help parents and teens find their way through these difficult issues.

Parents are often fearful of the activities their kids begin to get into. They can become discouraged with how to effectively respond to teen emotions, especially anger. Alcohol and drug experimentation and other risky behaviors rightly concern caring parents. Parents worry that the choices their teens are making could have negative, even disastrous impacts on their lives. These fears are well-founded and can be addressed directly and respectfully when an atmosphere of genuine respect and compassion is actively cultivated.

Youth often feel misunderstood and overly scrutinized by adults. After all, they just want what everyone longs for: independence and the right to live their own lives. Learning to listen well can make all the difference in the world.

Developing effective communication skills so all parties can openly express their concerns and appreciate the views of everyone involved are indispensable in mediating conflict. These skills can be taught and learned in a safe and confidential environment like the family counseling office. All family members deserve to be heard and valued, especially in difficult times.

Working with teens and parents is an area of specialization in my counseling practice. My years as a family therapist at Northwest Youth Services in Bellingham gave me a wonderful opportunity to develop and hone the skills required for compassionate mediation of parent and teen conflicts. I am happy to work with parents and teens, in family counseling or individual therapy.
